About Artistic Glazier Jiricka-Coufal

Workshop specialized in glass-painting and lead embedding was established in Prague in 1935. It was founded by Josef Jiřička Senior (1903-1969), who also implemented the designs of stained-glass windows by Max Švabinský here.
These designs were arranged for St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle (The Last Judgement, 1935-1939, and the Holy Trinity, 1939-1949). Jiřička had also realized works by Karel Svolinský, Jan Bauch, Vladimír Sychra, Cyril Bouda and others. In 1964, Josef Jiřička, sr. passed the management of the workshop to Josef Jiřička, jr. (born 1934), a graduate of the glass-making school in Nový Bor and of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (at the atelier of J. Kaplický). He created here the stained-glass windows for St Bartholomew Church in Kolín, as wel as for churches in Pilsen, Rakovník, Velký Bor, Most, Košice, Libiš, etc. Designs of staned-glass for the ceremonial hall in Klinkovice (Moravia), for the Old-New and Pinkas synagogues in Prague, the Gothic chapel of the Old-Town Hall, and for the restored Convent of St Agnes, as many others were also created by Josef Jiřička, jr. He implemented the designs of stained-glass windows by Karel Svolinský, Jan Bauch, Cyril Bouda, Josef Jíra and of many other artists, and he also restored the fragments of Gothic stained-glass windows from Kolín, Nadslav, and the castles of Křivoklát and Kost. In the period between 1991-2002 the third descendent in Jiřička’s generation Martin (*1958 †2002) was in charge of workshop management.

At present, the workshop is lead by Petr Coufal (a disciple of Josef Jiřička, jr.) who continues the tradition of the Jiřička’s family. One can see here the progress of restoration works on stained-glass windows from historical sights from the whole republic, implementations of works by contemporary artists, as well as the production of replicas of historical stained-glass works. It is possible to order stained-glass windows, glass with sandblast or etched ornaments, or to buy a replica of a Gothic or an Art-Nouveau stained-glass window in here. Those who are interested in glass working can visit a unique deposit of historical glass from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, original glass paintings by Max Švabinský, or an original design book of Art-Nouveau stained-glass works.
